Amu Darya

Also referred to as Oxus (Oxos) in Greek, Amu Darya served as a boundary between Genghis Khan’s empire and Alexander the Great’s. It has numerous tributaries with Jaxartes/Syr Darya being its twin river; Brahmanda Purana refers to it as Vaksu/Vakhsh; this name can also be found in Avestan texts referring to it. It drains a significant portion of central Asia and Iran.
