“Deep Throat” refers to an anonymous government informant who provided details on Watergate to Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein of The Washington Post investigative reporters. Deep Throat’s revelations provided the impetus for a series of articles that exposed the Nixon administration’s misdeeds, leading to President Richard Nixon’s resignation and conviction of former White House Chief of Staff H. R. Haldeman and White House Aide G. Gordon Liddy; as well as Counsel Charles Colson. Woodward and Bernstein never provided details regarding Deep Throat’s identity; however, many individuals have made assumptions as to their whereabouts. Family attorneys claimed in 2005 that former FBI Associate Director Mark Felt was Deep Throat; however, at that time Felt, who was suffering from dementia at that point, denied being Deep Throat numerous times and did not confirm or deny Woodward or Bernstein’s allegations against him. Another leading candidate could be White House Associate Counsel Fred F. Fielding due to accessing confidential presidential documents.
