Salted Carmen and the Health Consequences of Excessive Salt Consumption

Salt has long been an integral part of life in various regions and cultures around the world, reflecting their geographies and cultures through which it was produced. Salt was essential in ancient trade routes; fish, meat and vegetables could not be shipped without being preserved with it first; in fact, some ancient mummies even testify to its preservation powers!

Our research indicates that consumers understand the adverse health impacts associated with excessive salt consumption, and wish to reduce it. Our results support further government-sponsored information activities which promote consumer nutrition-related health literacy as well as willingness to pay more for lower salt foods.
