Theatre can showcase unique perspectives that would otherwise be difficult to convey through other mediums, and St. Joseph High School’s production of Savageemma did just that through skillful acting and intricate sets and costumes.

Milena Adames created stunning sets that encapsulated the fifties era. From large pieces like a baby blue sofa and vintage lamps to smaller details like floral paintings, candlesticks and tall plants – her design brought back fond memories. Costumes by Siobhan McMahon and Tessa Moore fit seamlessly with this period as Mrs Paddy had teased hair while Mrs Savage donned an eccentric pink and green floral dress featuring numerous big bows and buttons – it all fit right in with her time period setting!

Mrs. Savage brings a delightful presence to Cloisters Mental Institute, where patients live their own versions of reality. She befriends and assists the eccentric patients when her ruthless stepchildren attempt to grab their inheritance bonds, showing true meaning of love and family ties. Unfortunately, due to these actions Mrs. Savage eventually ends up institutionalized despite all efforts made by fellow patients who argue she is not insane.
